Kudos to Romney for standing up to be counted regarding Santos. Squeaker McCarthy is being squeezed into a corner now, after he first tried to brush off calls for Santos to step down. The next fallback position taken by GOP House leadership is that Santos fate would should be decided by the voters...of course, that would not come until the next election. The latest ploy to keep the seat securely in GOP hands is that Santos will be investigated by the House Ethics Committee...you know, the committee that the CooCoo Caucus wants to gut or eliminate entirely. Anybody paying attention to this progression can, with confidence, predict that this version of the committee would give Santos a rebuke at most and find nothing that would get him thrown out. The pressure necessary to remove Santos must be amped up and constantly applied. His lies influenced many, many voters to cast a ballot for him; he got the office under false pretenses and there must be no precedent set by allowing him to keep it.

In contrast to The Orange Menace's lie-filled speeches, the fact checkers had a much easier time of it last night. Some of Biden's claims needed more context, as is typical in SOTU speeches. However, the man spoke the truth...including the claim about the Republicans having called for cutting Social Security and Medicare benefits/funding. This has been documented so many times in the decades since the passing into law of those programs. The Republicans had to be dragged aboard kicking and screaming in the first place. And they have never stopped trying to float the idea of repeal, cuts, privatization, etc. Pelosi was spot-on in post-speech interviews that the unprecedented heckling last night was an attempt by Republicans to deflect/deny what history tells us is true. Rick Scott and Ron Johnson, et al are only the most recent of those advocates. And, even though many Republican lawmakers are afraid to admit it, there are quite a number of them ready to pull out the knives and carve up Social Security and Medicare if they sense any weakening of the resolve of We, the People to support those programs and demand legislation that will reset the funding that will keep them healthy and out of the hands of Wall Street banksters.

Last night, once again, the heckling, shouting, cat-calling Republicans attending the SOTU underscored just how low they are willing to go to support lies. They are a national embarrassment. Their squealing and squawking is understandable. As the party led by the worst president in history, as the party that supported insurrection and the blocking of the transfer of power that is a hallmark of our democracy, as the party that spawned and back conspiracy theory after conspiracy theory, their leadership is walking backwards toward a corner they evidently didn't see. In the words of Paul Begala, a Dem strategist, this is what the Republican Party is facing after Biden's speech: "...Joe Biden’s polling may be weak, but his strategic position is strong. Coming off the most productive first two years of any president since Lyndon B. Johnson, Biden’s political priorities have shifted from legislation to implementation. He has already achieved more in two years than most presidents in eight: the biggest investment in the middle class since Franklin Roosevelt, in infrastructure since Dwight Eisenhower, in health care since Barack Obama and in climate change and chip technology in history. Then there’s the biggest expansion of veterans’ benefits since World War II, the first gun safety law since Bill Clinton — and with this week’s jobs report, the lowest US unemployment rate since Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were walking on the moon. With Republicans now in control of the House, Biden is freed from the messy business of actually passing bills. Instead, as in tonight’s State of the Union Address, he can propose wildly popular programs and challenge Speaker Kevin McCarthy and his band of not-so-merry men and women to pass them — or not. Capping insulin for all Americans at $35 a month, providing free community college, restoring the Child Tax Credit — which lifted almost one in three poor children out of poverty — and raising taxes on corporate stock buybacks: all these Biden initiatives will have enormous appeal across the US and across party lines. McCarthy will be faced with an impossible choice: either give Biden a popular accomplishment to run on or give him an appealing issue to run on. For Biden, it’s a win-win proposition..."

Evidently, cheers broke out in the West Wing when Biden endorsed the apparent "unanimity" the verbal protests from the GOP side of the aisle represented.  Social Security and Medicare are evidently off the chopping block. However, Republicans have refused to move in a timely fashion on raising the debt ceiling and they are not being specific on what spending cuts they will push for. Americans should have been given specifics some time ago.
