Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas is undergoing testing on his right shoulder and could require surgery to address the injury, pitching coach Matt Blake announced at Yankees camp this morning (Twitter link, with video, via Marly Rivera ESPN). The surgery under consideration would “not necessarily” end Montas’ season, Blake added, but the mere possibility represents a substantial escalation from where things previously stood with regard to Montas and his shoulder. Montas was already known to be behind schedule heading into spring training, thanks to inflammation in his right shoulder that slowed his offseason progression. General manager Brian Cashman said three weeks ago, however, that the damage didn’t appear to be structural in nature. The GM added that more information would be gained once Montas began his throwing program. That was scheduled for late January, and it now seems clear that things didn’t go as smoothly as hoped.

I think he was hurt when the Yankees acquired him.

Sounds like he might be another Carl Pavano

Boone just announced surgery is scheduled for next Tuesday and he is probably going to miss the entire season. Doesn't appear the Yanks will get anything from a trade in which they gave up a couple of promising arms. I know this might sound like second guessing, but based on the organization's past history in dealing with injuries the decision to trade for a pitcher with some injury red flags without getting a clean bill of health moving foerward is dissapointing.

I had posted a link a few weeks ago that mentioned this was a real possibility. He was on the IL last season before we acquired him and if this is any way related to that injury then this was not only a wasted and dumb trade, the FO did a poor job vetting the situation. We traded a couple of good prospects for nothing not to mention we signed him for $7.5 million which now is anoither salary we are getting zilch for. Add in Hicks and Donaldson and that is close to $40 million we could have used. Frustrating to say the least.

I'd rather see Schmidt as the 5th starter than German. I think Schmidt is more suited for a SP role than a BP guy. I also think he has shown enough promise to be a number 5 SP.

Jeff Passan: Right-hander Frankie Montas, the biggest acquisition for the New York Yankees at the trade deadline last year who was expected to be a big part of their rotation this year, will undergo shoulder surgery on Tuesday that could cause him to miss the season, manager Aaron Boone said.

this would get any other GM fired except for Cashman.

Now reading that planned surgery is to do a scope to **** damage and the best case has him pitching sometime during the second half of the season. Don't call me optomistic about this.

I agree and German could be great out of the Bullpen. He's been better as a reliver in a fairly limited role.
